Shriya is on a roll. After last year's hit film Thiruvilayadal with Dhanush, she is back with the Tamil film Sivaji starring superstar Rajnikanth, which is set for release shortly.

Shriya has four more films in her kitty -- two Tamil and two Hindi. She is also doing a dance number in the Telugu film Munna slated for release this week.

Radhika Rajamani caught up with the busy star to chat about Sivaji and her superstar co-star.

How did you feel when you got the first call to act in Sivaji opposite Rajnikanth?

Ecstatic! It was project which had all the big names -- Shankar Sir, Rajnikanth, AVM (producers), K V Anand (cinematographer) and Thota Tharani (art direction).

Did you sign for the big names?

I signed the film because I was getting a chance to work with Rajnikanth. I am a fan of his movies and his style. He has created a class of cinema and for me, that is a big thing.

Highlights of Sivaji

Sivaji is slick and one of the best-made films of from South. It is a movie that will appeal to all age-groups with a moral lesson or two.

Rajni's fans will enjoy it tremendously. Watch out for Rajnikanth's hairdos -- they are mindblowing. The characters are believable too.

Sivaji is a South Indian James Bond movie. It can't be made again, at least not immediately.

In fact the waiting period (before I bagged the the) was like a suspense thriller. My blood pressure and sugar also shot up. It was the most stressful part of my life.

Then on the 10th day, I was asked to come to Chennai. Shankar wanted to meet me (he was scouting for locations in Italy during his audition and so, had not met him). When I went there, Shankar took me to Dr Mohan, a well-known dentist who works with stars. I was scared whether my teeth were going to be pulled off.

Shankar assured me that Dr Mohan was very good and after giving him instructions, I was asked to sit in the chair. Dr Mohan then took some measurements. I was later told that a 'denture' was necessary as Shankar noticed (in the screen test) that when I smiled, my smile was not visible.

I removed my moustache and Shankar instructed designer Nandini to give me a spotless dhoti, shirt, shoes, a Rolex watch and Ray Ban sunglasses.

Then he explained the role and the character and said Sivaji had only one villain. I was to play Adi Seshan, a powerful businessman. Shankar did not want a villainish look.

Suman has added a feather in his cap by playing the villain in the upcoming Sivaji.

It was rumoured that Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani and Nana Patekar had been offered the role before.

Acting in Tamil films after two decades, Suman has proved his versitality in the Telugu industry by playing a variety of roles ranging from action to mythological portrayals of Lord Venkateswara, Rama and Sathyanarayana, with aplomb.

Pinning down a 'villain' is not easy but Radhika Rajamani did just that and got him to talk about his role and the experience of sharing screen space with Rajnikanth.

Bagging the role

I got a call from (director) Shankar's office asking me to come to Chennai. I was working in Sathyanarayana Swami then and when I had a three-day break, I went to Chennai where co-director JD met me for an audition. Shankar had wanted a particular get-up. The actor had to act without a wig, remove his moustache and allocate one year for the project.

For the audition, I didn't remove my moustache but was asked to gel my hair, wear a dhoti, walk and says some dialogues. I did that. For me, it was like going to an examination after many years.

This has triggered quite a disturbance in the session and Minister Paridi Ilam Vazhudi was not too sure about the answer and replied that he would get back to Mr.Raman after a while.

But the actress has one more reason to celebrate, as her second Hindi film 'Awarapan' opposite Emraan Hashmi is all set to release this month-end.

Emraan Hashmi who is termed as the 'Kissing Badshah' has been unable to do what he does best in this movie. But Shriya being what she is, has clearly said that she has no problems doing a kissing scene if the role demands it. She added: "I won’t act in vulgar scenes at the same time I don’t mind as long as the kissing scene is filmed in an aesthetic sense".

Director Shankar is always known to be highly optimistic about his movies, and Sivaji is no exception. In fact the director was bold enough to admit that he is extremely satisfied with the outcome. But then, Sivaji is no ordinary movie. It is a movie where the most powerful name in Kollywood – the Badshah of Style - superstar Rajini is involved. Obviously it qualifies as a must see film even before its release. Theatre owners are having a tough time, as the pressure mounts with the release date nearing, as people from all walks of life are expected to take time off from their hectic schedules to watch The Boss in action. Generally Shankar goes on a vacation with his family only after his movie hits the screens. But this time, the director, to cool is heels off has advanced his vacation two weeks earlier. Even Rajini, who has flown down to the Himalayas, will return only two weeks after the movie is screened in theatres.

With their conspicuous absence, both the director and the superstar will miss out the real life action. Looks like Sivaji's mammoth success will welcome them both on their return to Kollywood.

Looks like Rajini’s plans to stay away from the Sivaji hullabaloo have taken a U turn. The superstar is back in town winding up his brief pilgrimage to the Himalayas - that is customary of him after wrapping up his movies. Since Sivaji’s prints were not ready when the superstar flew to the snow capped mountains of Himalayas, he viewed only the first half of the movie that was edited. Now that Rajini is back in town and the movie is ready to hit the screens, AVM invited Rajini for an exclusive preview show of Sivaji. The movie was showcased to Rajini and his family including Latha Rajinikanth and daughters Ishwarya, and Soundarya in the AVM preview theatre.

Sources present at the venue revealed that Rajini was obviously elated at the outcome. We could not make another movie of this kind even if we tried; Rajini was quoted as saying. Sivaji has exceeded even my expectations, the superstar added.

Now that is enough to churn out more expectations amongst the already frenzied fans.

Rajnikanth brings a certain style to Tamil cinema. His signature moves, mannerisms and talent are a delight to watch. Though we see little of him nowadays, with very few films being released, each film is a celebration for his fans.

Tamil superstar Rajnikanth offered prayers at the Lord Venkateswara temple last night for the success of his upcoming film, Sivaji: The Boss. Directed by Shankar, the film will release on June 15.

Accompanied by members of his family, Rajnikanth motored to the Tirumala hills from Chennai. The star had offered prayers with Shankar earlier as well, before the film's shooting started.

Talking to reporters after the darshan, Rajnikanth said that the film highlighted the menace of 'black money and corruption.'

After an overnight stay at the hilltop, he participated in the pre-dawn rituals of the temple.

With three more weeks for Sivaji to hit theatres, the mania has now spread to neighbouring Kerala. Speculation is rife in this state, always a strong market for Tamil cinema, about everything from the plot of the film to Rajnikanth's role.

"Tamil films have a spectacular market here and the films of some of the big stars from that state command better reception at the box-office than the other stars here," says an industry insider.

Grapevine has it that the distribution rights of Sivaji have fetched Rs 3 crores in Kerala. Do note that the figure corresponds to the production budgets of the costliest Malayalam films!

"There is no denying the fact that some fabulous experiments are happening in Tamil ,and there is no need for a regional bias when it comes to good cinema," says Johny Antony, director of films like Thuruppugulan, CID Moosa, Kochi Rajavu and Inspector Garud.

"I just can't wait to see Sivaji and I am even excited about Rajnikanth's project after this one, as Shankar brings out the ultimate in every hero. I really believe only Rajnikanth can break the myth that actors fade away trying to outdo what they have done in a Shankar film," he adds.

Pradeep Nair, award winning director of the film Oridam, thinks mainly the young crowd are attracted to the various themes offered by Tamil films. "Also the movies are generally satisfying the viewers with fights, songs and colourful visuals. Besides the existing stars, new talents are coming up Tamil films," he says.

"The theatres are doing brisk business with Tamil and even Hindi films these days."

Mani K R, a distributor who released the Jeyam Ravi-Bhavana starrer Deepavali in Kerala recently, says, "Sivaji is expected to do better business than some of the Malayalam films released during Vishu. There is a certain group of loyal viewers here, which now include youngsters as well," he adds.

A prominent director from Kerala jokes that from the business angle, theatres are justified if they go for other language films apart from Malayalam ones.

Johny Antony has the last word, frankly stating that "it's perfectly okay if the viewer prefers a well crafted Tamil film over a lousy Malayalam film."
